Bozeman Mutual Aid Community Hosts Second Free Market to Feed Neighbors and Strengthen Local Food Networks
The Bozeman Mutual Aid Community is proud to announce its third Bozeman Free Market, to be held on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at the Gallatin County Fairgrounds from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
Following the success of the first event on November 9th and a second successful event November 23rd— both of which saw hundreds of community members come together to share food, clothing, and essential goods—the Bozeman Mutual Aid Community is continuing its mission to ensure that no one in Gallatin Valley goes hungry.
The Free Market invites everyone to bring what they can and take what they need. Donations may include homemade meals (without meat), baked goods, garden produce, preserved foods, and other essentials. No money changes hands — this is neighbors supporting neighbors, powered entirely by community generosity.
Empowered by the Montana Local Food Choice Act
This event operates in accordance with the Montana Local Food Choice Act (MCA 50-49-202), a state law designed to strengthen local food systems by allowing direct, voluntary exchanges of homemade or farm-produced foods between individuals — free from unnecessary licensing or regulation.
The law encourages Montanans to connect directly through food, reducing waste and keeping food local. Under the Act:
- Individuals may share homemade foods directly to consumers without commercial certification.
- Prepared foods cannot contain meat unless that meat was processed in a USDA-inspected facility.
- Producers must ensure food is clearly labeled and voluntarily exchanged between individuals.
These commonsense rules make it easier for local people to feed one another safely and legally — an approach that lies at the heart of Bozeman Mutual Aid’s work.
How to Get Involved
Everyone is welcome at the Bozeman Free Market. You can help by:
- Bringing food, baked goods, garden produce, or non-meat meals to share.
- Donating clothing, household essentials, or hygiene products.
- Volunteering to help with setup, cleanup, or organization.
- Spreading the word to friends, schools, and local organizations.
“When we take care of each other, we make Bozeman stronger,” says the Bozeman Mutual Aid Community team. “No contribution is too small — whether it’s a jar of soup, a warm coat, or an hour of your time.”
